On Yuri

Yuri 23 is a genetically manufactured human created by for the remaining members of the former Bolshevik (Russian Communist) party. Designed under the tutelage of the Communist scientist Sergei Jones (name was changed after the Flame War in 1986 wherein The American Justice Squad removed the communist government and forced assimilation of names to more American ones (which itself was not done until 1988)).

Yuri 23 was the 25th in a series of genetically made supermen that was not completed until 1986 and kept locked down in test tubes until around 1999 when he was opened up to begin training (his number was changed to 23 because of that whole 23 conspiracy thing). “Born” with no memory and limited brain capabilities Yuri was easy enough to mold into the perfect slogan spewing, ask-no-questions leader equipped with an assortment of genetic superpowers and the mind of what is essentially a 8 year old at the beginning of the series (which is more or less around 2007, lets say. (the only page to mention the year leaves it unclear only mentioning it is in the 2000s)).

The original goal for Yuri was to unleash him as the Millennium Man but at the time Yuri lacked speech abilities, use of superpowers and he had not speedily aged enough to be of use (wherein he ages about 4 times as fast as the average person currently leaving him somewhere in the equivalent of his 30s). At this point he grew up raised on the Communist Manifesto (Of Slogans) and learned the important skills of speed reading and public speaking.

After a disastrous attempt in power training in 2002, Sergei was forcibly trained to use his powers with the utmost care. His powers include, levitation (and thus flying) laser vision, superhuman strength and a myriad of other unexplored powers (most likely not including the ability to shoot out tiny versions of himself).

He has been assigned to lead the three other members of the Bolshevik Superhuman Alliance taking orders from Sergei and a small association of other leaders. The current plan is to take over the American Justice Squad and therefore the world!

3 Picks

Koltreg on Comics was about 500 times more difficult than it should have been to write wherein, I somehow confused myself and though I was supposed to write on my past in comics. Hell no!
This week since I missed last Wednesday I’ll discuss three comics I am enjoying.

The Infinity Gauntlet -
The Infinity Gauntlet saga was one of those cataclysmic and world shattering events that Marvel loves to do where Thanos killed basically tries and destroys all of the universe and then Adam Warlock stops him but not before there is death and chaos. (For the rap inspired version of this story see Adam WarRock’s The War For Infinity.)
In the new Infinity Gauntlet in the Marvel Adventures (aimed towards younger readers) there are intergalactic truckers, space pirates and some honestly fun writing. The series is penned by Brian Clevinger of Atomic Robo and 8-bit Theatre fame and has been one of my guilty pleasures. While it is aimed towards kids it only means that death isn’t dwelled upon and Dr Doom makes sandwiches.

Orc Stain -
On the other side of the comics galaxy is Orc Stain. The series is penned by James Stokoe of Won Ton (which I recently got) and is the tale of a fantasy world filled with orcs. Dicks are valued above all else and … no literally the currency is made of dicks.
The hero of the story is One-Eye, a one eyed with an amazing skill for picking locks and breaking into things. His skills are needed to fulfill a prophecy for the Orc Tzar to take over and unite everyone so the paths cross and it is wonderful.
The series is ridiculously detailed with giant army scenes being swarmed with independent goblins and everything is colored with melted rainbow sherbet. A collection is supposedly coming out in December (the series has been slightly delayed) but buy it if you can.

Strange Tales 2 -
Strange Tales, as opposed to the original Marvel series introducing classic heroes like Doctor Strange and Brother Voodoo (RIP) serves as a hosting ground once more for the independent comics people. This includes mainstays Tony Millionaire and new artists like Kate Beaton and James Stokoe.
The mileage really depends on each story and some of them don’t do anything for me but when it hits, it hits hard.
The first collection of Strange Tales is also currently available in paperback.

Ooops I *ed The Universe

I realized the other day that I’ve ended up creating a parody of “major world shattering events” with Socialfist. This is not a bad thing but it was not my original intention. I was hoping to create this enclosed tale that would be able to stand on its own, answering all the questions I wanted to and never requiring me to write anything outside of it. Then I wanted to create a realistic world and things escaped from there.
To create a realistic world, I needed to go and create characters and to create realistic characters, well I needed histories. For the histories I needed more characters. Then I just got fed up and I accidentally created a pretty extensive history where about 50% is outlined and everything else is loose. Characters will only be able to be barely introduced for the story to work well. The problem is that this extensive universe can only be lightly scratched, some parts wont even be covered and other parts if I expose them early will spoil bits of the story.
I am stuck between a rock and a hard place and thus this story is like reading the Infinite Crisis book. There are all these characters and events and callbacks getting tossed at you and I don’t even have the added benefit of having well known characters. I personally hated/didn’t get the appeal of Infinite Crisis. There was so much killing and crowd filled clusterfucks going on that I finished it not caring about it at all.
Socialfist has some differences though. It is introducing its characters, it is a much slower pace, I can annotate where needed and maybe you don’t need to know everything about the characters. It can help me surprise you, the readers. You can’t complain about extensive canonical errors if there is no canon. I don’t have to deal with silver age stuff like pink kryptonite and I control the entire tone and legacy. No Batman pissing himself, no sibling incest, no time traveling pouch-men.
I guess my point is that creating your own canon and trying to limit yourself is a hard thing to do. Letting it grow is natural. Being fully in control has benefits that are pretty awesome and ultimately I get to decide everything that happens.
So it goes. If nothing else, I have material on characters and backstory that I can mine for years to come.

On Reading

One of the things you always hear people mention when they talk about making comics is how you shouldn’t read comics. I sure as heck didn’t until I was about 17 or 18. While I got a large amount of inspiration from the cartoon shows, I was reading just about everything else.
As a kid I was always a pretty intense reader or I was reading nothing. I hit those Great Illustrated Classics that almost every kid knew of and I had an avid love for Mythology and Folktales and subsequently got books of it as well. As I grew older I began to get more into what I read as a child.
The Great Illustrated Classics lead me to read some of the actual books. I pounded through Les Mis during a summer and while I didn’t actually read a lot of the novels yet that most kids “had” to read I have a great enough understanding of the historical tropes through my studies.
My interest in myth and folklore lead to me going on and studying myth, writing papers on folklore and reading a lot of the more original translation.
Combined I also loved history and social studies and literature so I got a diverse background of knowledge to draw from.
Finally when I got into comics those helped to pave the way for me. My love of folk and myth got me to love Hellboy, Sandman and now Fables (I’m currently in the 4th volume).
So I guess what I am saying is by not reading comics as a kid, not that there is anything wrong with that, I just ended up reading a lot more and being exposed to more stuff.

So I guess this is less on comics and more on me talking about not reading comics. :]

Busy Weekend

My apologies for the abrupt article this week. It has been hectic so far and will be increasingly hectic until Tuesday.
Today and tomorrow are two big Pittsburgh days preparing for the holiday called Light Up Night wherein I get maybe three times the normal customers.
Sunday is a concert I planned partially with internet friends, Adam WarRock and Blackwolf and also Ghoulish and The Russian Futurists.
Monday is, well Mondays are always tough with morning class, noon class and all of that other stuff. Unngh.
Will do my best to have a Monday article prepared ahead of time (can you just pare some?). See you then friend Internet.
