I decided I am giving up on reboot anger because I never really cared about the mainstream DC universe. I’ve said before I never really read comics until a year or so ago. If this bothers you, feel free to stop reading because ultimately if there is something you don’t like that is your choice and that attitude hurts others in the end.
I got into comics with Dark Horse and Hellboy even though I loved the Marvel and DC cartoons I grew up with. When I finally got to reading Marvel and DC stuff even though I had the free opportunity to read anything working at a comic shop, I didn’t. I asked for advice and more often than not people were more likely to tell me what to avoid. They’d like things a bit but they hated other things they’d given up. “Oh yeah, I used to like Teen Titans but then it got bad.” “How long ago did it get bad.” “Three years ago.” “Do you still read it.” “No. It’s rubbish.” The people telling me what not to try made me never try comics. Three months in I started using the excuse that there was too much to read (though that is totally true).
Let me drop in a side story. Growing up my parents hated rap. They’d change the channel if it came on. They avoided it. Now I love the stuff, to a point. I was told Doctor Who was shit and I have spent the entire last week watching the entire series because I really enjoy it. Up next is Torchwood because I want to give it a try. People who say what I might like or not like can be wrong and I need to give it a try.
So now we sit on the precipice of a company wanting to try something new, to save itself and to get new readers. We have yet to open an issue and people are calling it shit. The thing is though, these people writing and drawing the comics believe at least somewhat in what they are making. They like doing what they do for a living. In fact, I doubt there are any creators who are saying “You know what I want – I want to make Batman or whoever so shitty that nobody will want to read him!” The people are trying to save the characters they love and that you love. I want to help them.
I’m going to trust these artists to make good work and I’ll judge after it starts. I sure as hell wont buy everything but if it looks good I’ll give it a shot. If I hear good things, I’ll give it a shot. If I hear shit about it, I still might because people can be wrong. Everyone has different tastes and appeasing all of them is impossible. That is why we have so many flavors. Just do a favor though, don’t call someone else’s favorite flavor shit because it sounds bad. They like the flavor for a reason and might like it too.
